Out of the Hollywood Hellmouth: a Buffy reboot

It’s too bad to be true! No. I won’t believe it. They cannot remake Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’m putting my foot down on this one. It will always be too soon to remake Joss Whedon’s most iconic heroine, the petit powerhouse filled out perfectly by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Already an improvement on an earlier incarnation–portrayed with adequate spunk by Kristi Swanson–Whedon’s Buffy has been pushed to every extreme. But this unspeakable evil has her cornered: according to io9, it’s out of Whedon’s hands, and into the palms of one Whit Anderson.

She better have a goooood idea up her sleeve, because anyone with the audacity to bring Buffy back from the brink of her awesome television conclusion (where she lives in my mind — I passed on the comics), better deliver. Oh, did I mention that Ms. Anderson’s an actress? I’m not sure if she’ll be writing this thing, or lobbying for the lead part. Joss had this to say: “I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but…I can't wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill,” adding with impeccable humour, “I can, however, take this time to announce that I'm making a Batman movie. Because there's a franchise that truly needs updating.” We laugh, but only to keep from crying.
