Pedro Almodovar planning a Body Snatchers-inspired film

Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In was one of the best movies of 2011. You can read Xander’s review of the film right here. It was Almodovar’s horror riff, part Eyes Without a Face (but extremely perverse) and part Boxing Helena (but actually good). One of the director’s upcoming movies may be another play on a genre, this time science fiction.

During a lecture at BAFTA in London, Almodovar said he was planning a film inspired by 1950’s genre movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers. He said the following:

I am still young enough to make a science fiction movie. I have ideas for this genre. The way I would like to do it is present something impossible in a real, domestic way. One of the scripts on my desk is of that genre, so I hope to make that.

This sounds really promising, and I dig both the original Don Siegel film and that masterfully odd 1978 remake by Philip Kaufman. It may be a while before he gets to this. Almodovar added, “I live with my stories for many years. I write more like a novelist than a screenwriter.”

Almodovar’s next film, I’m So Excited, is currently in post-production. It’s been described as a light comedy mostly set on an airplane. The Spanish title is Los Amantes Pasajeros, which means both “the fleeting lovers” and “the passenger lovers.” It will probably premiere at Cannes.
