Penny Dreadful: City of Angels trailer trades gothic for noir, is powerful

0

Showtime’s Penny Dreadful ran for three seasons from 2014 – 2016 and was a terrific gothic horror anthology that revolved around many of the classic monster archetypes and characters like Dracula, the wolf man, Dr. Frankenstein,  Frankenstein’s monster, Dorian Gray, and Van Helsing. Featuring a stacked cast including Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, and Josh Hartnett, the series ran a natural course and didn’t try to force plot threads beyond a reasonable arc. For as good as it was, and as critically acclaimed as it was, the series was probably under-appreciated–maybe indicative of why it received no coverage here on Flixist.

Following in the footsteps of another successful horror anthology series, American Horror Story, the events of the spinoff series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels is set in a completely different locale in a different time. Trading in 19th century London for 1938 Los Angeles, the series’ look and feel have adapted entirely and in fitting fashion. This is the second television series trailer to drop in the past month (see West World‘s season 3 jaw-dropper here) that over delivers, promising what might make for some sensational Sunday night viewing on both HBO and Showtime this spring. Lest we not forget, Natalie Dormer (Stranger Things) is playing the devil.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres on Showtime on April 26.
