Rapaport responds to Q-Tip’s disapproval over ATCQ doc

A Tribe Called Quest was one of the most influential bands on my young impressionable mind. At a young age, I already knew Industry Rule #4080, the dangers of leaving your wallet in El Segundo, and was asked the very important question of “can I kick it?” (the answer: YES YOU CAN). I’m sure I speak for Geoff when I say that a huge criteria for the opposite sex is to be able to recite Electric Relaxation, so naturally I’m very excited for Michael Rapaport’s (yes, that Michael Rapaport) upcoming Tribe documentary Beats, Rhymes & Fights. But not everybody is as excited as I am, namely Tribe front man Q-Tip.

ATCQ member Q-Tip has voiced (and by voiced I mean tweeted) his disapproval of the documentary that follows the group during their on-again/off-again reunion tour. When talking with MTV, Rapaport had this to say in response to Q-Tip’s objections:

“I adore ATCQ and my intention wasn’t to ever make them feel uncomfortable but my intention was never to make a fluff piece so we kind of hit a bump in the road … this is going to be the real story of A Tribe Called Quest. When…

At a young age, I already knew Industry Rule #4080, the dangers of leaving your wallet in El Segundo, and was asked the very important question of “can I kick it?” (the answer: YES YOU CAN). I'm sure I speak for Geoff when I say that a huge criteria for the opposite sex is to be able to recite Electric Relaxation, so naturally I’m very excited for Michael Rapaport’s (yes, that Michael Rapaport) upcoming Tribe documentary Beats, Rhymes & Fights. But not everybody is as excited as I am, namely Tribe front man Q-Tip.

ATCQ member Q-Tip has voiced (and by voiced I mean tweeted) his disapproval of the documentary that follows the group during their on-again/off-again reunion tour. When talking with MTV, Rapaport had this to say in response to Q-Tip's objections:

"I adore ATCQ and my intention wasn’t to ever make them feel uncomfortable but my intention was never to make a fluff piece so we kind of hit a bump in the road … this is going to be the real story of A Tribe Called Quest. When I say 'the real story' that doesn’t mean that there’s going to be crazy sh*t. I didn’t unveil any secrets. From what I’ve learned Q-Tip and Phife have known each other their whole lives and they are like a family. And like any family, like any group — the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, EPMD, Public Enemy — they’ve had bumps in the road. I just think that because A Tribe Called Quest is so precious to fans, they were concerned about unveiling some of those things."

It’s an odd little spat going on between Rapaport and Q-Tip, especially considering that Q-Tip is an executive producer on the film, but other than that I look forward to the no holds barred insight into the lives of one of my favorite bands. Beats, Rhymes & Fights is set to make its debut at this years Sundance film festival. Check out MTV for the rest of the interview and check the gallery for a picture of my jack russell terrier who's also named Q-Tip (like I said, I'm a Tribe fan).
