REALLY BIG RUMOR: Apple to buy Sony, Disney, or EA???

Ok, this is another BIG grain of salt story, and it’s really more of a video game scoop than a movie one, but trust me, if it’s true, it’s huge.

Apple is rich as hell right now. They’ve got an extra $51 billion in cash, which is, top stock analysts agree, a lot of cabbage. Normally, according to the New York Times, this usually means the company will offer a stock dividend, or buy back some of its shares. However, Steve  Jobs mentioned on a conference call last week that Apple is saving the money for “’strategic opportunities’ that the company would be in a unique position to pursue. This means Apple is looking to buy someone. The top candidates are Electronic Arts, Adobe, Netflix, even Facebook. Also, reported by Computer And Video Games, other possible acquisitions include Disney, as in Walt Disney, and Sony. This is seriously a big deal, if any of it is true. To prevent clogging the front page, I’m going to put my thoughts below the cut, so click through for more.

Apple owning either Sony or Disney is a tremendous deal in terms of the movie industry. Disney’s biggest game is distribution, as they own not only the dozens of various Disney-branded outlets, but also Marvel and ABC. Sony also includes dozens of outlets for all different types of media, from movies to TV to video games. Apple owning one of these would not radically change the programming necessarily, not unless they want to kill the golden goose, but content distribution could be radically changed. All of a sudden, the iPhone has connectivity with your PS3, allowing you to control your PS3 via iPhone in the way you can with a PSP. The App Store starts carrying more Disney and Sony brand games and TV and movies and music. Apple all of a sudden owns dozens of new franchises, and they have a huge platform to push them on.

I need to reiterate that this is just a rumor, and a whopper at that. But it is a huge deal, and it could affect so, so much.
