By Tom Cruise reprises his role as the eponymous Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 2020 film Top Gun: Maverick. The film, of course, is a sequel to the original Top Gun film of 1986. This sequel will see Maverick confronted with the shadows of his past as he encounters the son of his late friend “Goose.”
I am thrilled to see Tom Cruise back in a pilot’s seat. I adore Top Gun. It has high-octane, heart-pounding action. It has romance. It has incredible music. And it also manages to really break your heart a time or two. It’s everything you could want in an 80s action-drama.
This new film looks promising. I like the idea of seeing just how far Maverick was able to push his abilities throughout his career. I like that he’ll get to teach the next generation of dog-fighters. It seems that the movie is trying to strike a balance between looking back with nostalgia, while looking forward to what the future might hold. Whether it will succeed in that is anyone’s guess. There is one thing I can definitively state from watching the trailer: it’s still cool to watch planes fly around.
