Revive Mystery Science Theater 3000 through Kickstarter

If you’re a dork of a certain age, you probably watched Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Comedy Central and later the Sci-Fi Channel. You probably have fond memories of the show and quote it around other MST3K fans. (“Shell! Teeth! Eyes! Flames! Claws! Breath! Scales! Fun!”)

While RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic have their appeal, many have wondered if MST3K could ever return.

Thanks to Kickstarter, Joel Hodgson may be able to bring MST3K back.

That’s right. $2 million for three episodes, with additional episodes to be produced if they reach and surpass their initial goal–$3.3 million for six episodes, $4.4 million for nine episodes, and $5.5 million for twelve episodes.

No official word yet on if the project will predominantly be driven by Joel, Trace Beaulieu, and Frank Coniff (team Cinematic Titanic), or if Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett (team RiffTrax) will be along for the ride. As noted by the AV Club, Hodgson would like a new cast to do the new MST3K, including a new hapless human, a new mad-scientist, and even new voices to do Crow and Tom Servo. The original cast (presumably for the two different incarnations of the show) is going to be invited back to help write and produce, possibly doing cameos as well.

Joel Hodgson will be doing an AMA on Reddit at 4:00pm EST today to answer questions about all this.

Keep circulating the URL.

UPDATE: Mike J. Nelson has stated on his Facebook page that he is not involved in the MST3K revival. Alas.
