Robert Downey, Jr. to voice know-it-all, Mr. Peabody

Robert Downey, Jr. has such a distinctive voice that it’s surprising he’s barely getting into voice acting. It’s fitting that his presumptuous voice will be attached to a genius… of sorts. Following on the heels of the financially-successful (but critically-bashed) Yogi Bear adaptation, DreamWorks Animation has announced a film adaptation of the Rocky and Bullwinkle spin-off cartoon, Peabody’s Improbable History, with Downey, Jr. in the title role.

According to The A.V. Club, the script is being written by Yogi Bear masterminds, Jeffrey Ventimilia and Joshua Sternin. However, unlike that movie, the adaptation, currently going by the title Peabody and Sherman, will strictly be in CGI. It is, however, being directed by The Lion King director, Rob Minkoff, so there is a beacon of hope surrounding the project.

For those who don’t remember Peabody’s Improbable History, Mr. Peabody and his “boy,” Sherman, would travel back in time using the WABAC Machine to witness various events in history. With so much taking place since the cartoon first debuted in the late 50s, it’ll be interesting to see which events they choose to cover.

To dial this back a bit, how do you guys feel about modern adaptations of classic cartoons? Are you a fan of them, even if they are just soulless cash-ins?
