Roma, The Favourite lead 2019 Oscar nominations

What a season it’s been, and it all comes down to this! That’s right, everyone’s favorite sport, the illustrious Academy Awards, is in full swing. Tracee Ellis Ross and Kumail Nanjiani announced the nominations for the 91st Oscars ceremony early this morning, and it’s quite an interesting list.

As expected, Roma and The Favourite lead the pack, both with ten nominations each. Alfonso Cuarón himself has four individual nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography tying records with Warren Beatty, Alan Menken, and Joel and Ethan Coen. The Academy has notoriously snubbed movies that made their wide releases on Netflix, but fortunes have changed with Roma being such a trailblazer.

Black Panther received seven nominations, including the coveted Best Picture nomination—this comes ten years after The Dark Knight was infamously snubbed, starting a conversation about what “Oscar prestige” is that continues to this day. Snubbed, however, was director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan. The film also missed a Visual Effects nomination, with the usual token MCU nomination going to Avengers: Infinity War instead. To be fair, that last fight with Kilmonger looked rough, but Thanos looked great.

Similar to Coogler, Bradley Cooper missed a potential first Best Director nomination for A Star is Born, while still getting nods in the Best Picture and Best Actor in a Leading Role categories. There’s also very little for A Quiet Place, only gaining a Sound Editing nomination. The off-kilter Sorry to Bother You and other favorites like Crazy Rich Asians received no such recognition, and while If Beale Street Could Talk is a contender in some categories, it missed out on Best Picture to controversial Golden Globe favorites Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody.

For as long as there will be Oscars, there will also be gripes about all of the snubs. I know I’m still upset that Mission: Impossible—Fallout didn’t even get any technical nominations. Make a category for stunts, dammit.

Check out the full list of nominations below, and catch the live ceremony (which will likely go on without a host) on Sunday, February 24 on ABC.
