Ryan Gosling directing How To Catch a Monster

They grow up so fast, don’t they? First he was in The Mickey Mouse Club, then he become a huge Hollywood star through pictures like Drive and Crazy, Stupid, Love, and now he’s moving on to the director’s chair. Is there anything this wunderkind can’t do? Looking into those opal blue eyes, I’m going to have to assume not. It looks like Ryan Gosling is taking everything he’s learned working under directors like Nicholas Winding Refn and Terrence Malick and is putting it into to practice.

Gosling will be making his directorial debut with How To Catch a Monster, a dark fantastical tale starring the always wonderfully buxom Christina Hendricks. The good news just keeps coming, doesn’t it? A brief synopsis of the film’s plot is as follows: How To Catch a Monster weaves elements of fantasy noir, and suspense into a modern day fairytale. Set against the surreal dreamscape of a vanishing city, Billy, a single mother of two, is swept into a macabre and dark fantasy underworld while her teenage son discovers a secret road leading to an underwater town. Both Billy and Bones must dive deep into the mystery, if their family is to survive.”

I can get behind that! It sounds almost Lovecraftian, which in turn sounds a little Del Toro-ish, and that’s always a good thing. The only real question now is if Gosling has the chops to pull it off. If he does, I’m not entirely sure how I can make any more time in my day to fantasize about being carried off into the sunset in his muscular, manly arms. Production will hopefully start some time in 2013.
