By The nominees for the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards have been announced and they’re so not surprising I almost fell asleep before I got to the end of the Best Actor category. The only one that really stands out to me is that of Naomi Watts in The Impossible. She was fantastic, but the film didn’t get a truly big awards push so her nom is a bit of a wild card. The fact that Nicole Kidman got nominated for her performance in The Paperboy for best supporting actress should tell you how weak that field is all around.
I am, of course, happy to see Javier Bardem get a nod for his turn in Skyfall and many of the actors definitely deserve these nominations even if you could see them coming a mile away. It would have been nice to have a few more curve balls in there, but you can’t really complain about great performances being nominated. Still, the complete lack of Jaquin Phoenix for The Master feels wrong considering his performance was light years better than four out the five actors nominated.
