Saoirse Ronan confirmed for The Hobbit

At only 16, Saoirse Ronan has already made an impressive career for herself, starting with her debut in Joe Wright’s acclaimed Atonement. Ronan also appears in Wright’s next picture,  Hanna , one of my most anticipated films of 2011. Clearly a favourite with the directors she works with, her Lovely Bones director, Peter Jackson, has also seen fit to cast the actress in another project of his, this time, the long-awaited Hobbit adaptation.

Ronan’s icy eyes and fair features predict her elven casting almost without a doubt. We already know that Cate Blanchett is returning to play Elf Queen Galadriel, so who does that leave? Rumour has it, Ronan will play woodland Elf Itaril, a new character of Jackson’s devising that will inject some more femininity into the largely male cast. Itaril is a young warrior elf, meaning that Ronan may put some of her Hanna training to good use. I hope that this means there is as much action in the future for this Academy Award nominee, as there are weightier roles.
