The Deus Ex movie that was announced last month seems to actually be moving forward at a steady clip. CBS films just sent over word that Scott Derrickson has been hired to direct the film. He will also write the screenplay for the upcoming videogame adaptation along with C. Robert Cargill.
The writing team is best known for the devishly scary Sinister, but this will be their first foray into something a bit juicier and thought provoking. Derrickson has also only directed horror films and the really bad The Day the Earth Stood Still, so his sci-fi cred is seriously lacking. It does raise a bit of worry that CBS Films isn’t heading in the right direction with this at all, but the Derrickson is quite the up and comer and maybe he’ll be able to redeem his action cred with the upcoming Goliath.
Derrickson’s keyword laden quote from the announcement does nothing inspire confidence though: “Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence. By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.”
