Screen Actor Guild awards

Last night, the Screen Actors Guild handed out its annual awards for acting excellence in film and television. The results often offer the best prediction of how films and actors will fare at the Academy Awards, held just a few weeks after the SAG ceremony. Looking at this year’s recipients, it seems the firm position The Social Network once held after numerous sweeps of critics’ association awards, is no longer secure. The film doing the unseating? The King’s Speech, which continues to gain awards momentum as we approach the Oscars; Tom Hooper’s Director’s Guild win was also announced this weekend. In addition to Colin Firth’s lead actor prize, the film had a surprise win in the ensemble acting category, upsetting the chances of favourite The Fighter.
