Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron rom-com it up in Long Shot’s first trailer

The romantic comedy might be getting poorly skewered by Isn’t It Romantic right now but the genre will never die and when it’s done right it can be really quite enjoyable. Both Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron have done it right in the past and it kind of looks like they might do it again, though in a very straightforward way, with Long Shot. This first trailer doesn’t make the film look like anything more than a straight-up rom-com but that’s not a bad thing.

Of course, the Secretary of State dating a reporter (who also happens to be a kid she babysat) isn’t exactly the most realistic of storylines but it does make for one of the more convoluted meet-cutes we’ve seen in a long while. Both Theron and Rogen can be incredibly charming and the jokes, including Rogen falling flat on his face, actually look funny enough to work. Like all good rom-coms it’ll really depend on how well the two leads play off each other.

Long Shot is going to premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, where we’ll be reviewing it. The rest of the world will have to wait until its release date on May 3, 2019.
