Settlers of Catan rights for film and TV acquired

If there’s one thing The LEGO Movie has proven to audiences and, most importantly, producers, is that there’s a good movie hidden inside every property, including toys.  Which is why I’m not really sure how to react when it was recently announced that the filming rights for the quintessential board game, Settlers of Catan, were purchased by producer Gail Katz.

This means that we’ll possibly be seeing either a television or feature film production of the popular board game.  The question on everyone’s minds seems to be what a film of this nature would even be about?  Watching farmers trade their wares for two hours?  A robber showing up and raising the stakes at the film’s climax?  An entire film just about the joys of sheep?  Well, Katz seems to already be intrigued about prospects of any Catan project on the horizon.

“I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years ever since my ‘Catan’-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it,” explains Katz.  “The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.”

As long as there’s something interesting enough there to make a movie out of, I’m sure the millions of fans of the game would be excited to see whatever exciting ideas could come from such an acquisition.  I know they’ve certainly piqued my curiosity as to what happens next.
