Shazam! 2 has reportedly entered development

SHAZAM! 2 has reportedly entered the development period. According to TV Season & Spoilers, work has started on the inevitable follow-up to DC’s hit comedy film. The same screenwriters will be returning from the first as well as director David F. Sandberg. Obviously, Zachary Levi will be reprising his role and filming is set to begin soon as pre-production is now complete.

As for plot details, it looks like 2 will feature the entire Shazam family. Sandberg was recently quoted as saying, “It feels like we could do more with the Shazam family. We just introduced them, but you could explore how they work as a family of heroes.” This follows from the ending of the first film, which saw Billy acquire the Wizard’s staff to share his powers with his foster siblings. There are a lot of them, so expect a ton of new faces.

According to star Zachary Levi, SHAZAM! 2 will not feature the presence of Black Adam. A famous villain to the character (and one set to be portrayed by Dwayne Johnson in a solo film), Black Adam won’t be appearing until SHAZAM! 3 happens. The reason for this is that WB is looking to establish the Shazam character for his own solo series instead of leaning too hard on the DCEU connections. Levi also believes the showdown would be the ultimate finale for the character, which would be silly to have after only two films.

We likely won’t find out more until closer to release. WB has a busy 2020 with Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey, and 2021 is already packed with Suicide Squad, Aquaman 2, and the Matt Reeves’ directed Batman, so SHAZAM! 2 may not be surfacing for quite a bit.
