Shazam 2 is officially underway

DC and Warner Bros have had quite the presence at this year’s Comic Con Experience in Brazil. Besides unveiling the first trailer for Wonder Woman 1984, the studios confirmed that a sequel to this year’s Shazam! is officially greenlit.

Few details are nailed down on the sequel, but star Zachary Levi is set to return as the titular superhero alter-ego of Billy Batson. We’d heard rumors of the sequel’s production earlier in the year, following the first film’s success at the box office, but nothing definitive. It would seem that director David F. Sandberg will be back, as well as screenwriter Henry Gayden.

It’s been well-reported at this point that Black Adam, Shazam’s rival from the DC books, will not be appearing in the standalone Billy Batson films. With Dwayne Johnson’s long-running commitment to the character paying off, Black Adam looks to be entering production soon as a separate-but-parallel film. Black Adam will release December 22, 2021.

As for Shazam 2, no dates are yet attached to the film’s release. Levi has hinted that production could begin in 2020, but nothing confirmed on that front yet. For more superheroic shenanigans, stay tuned.
