Snake is freed, option on ‘Escape from NY’ reboot expires

Lately, there’s been a whole lot of talk on movies being made just to retain the rights to make more. Even our comment box for The Amazing Spiderman‘s trailer has spawned a bit of a conspiracy theory to that effect and I can’t say I doubt it with action that looks like a fan made modification for Mirror’s Edge. When this happens, the result usually falls somewhere between first-of-a-trilogy-my-ass Atlas Shrugged Part 1 (my review here) and the 1990 Captain America (review will be posted soon).

Thankfully, but rarely, some producers just know better. After flirting with making The Dark Tower on a cut-rate budget, Universal finally passed on Ron Howard’s planned adaptation, and Akira seems to be following that same pattern now. Today’s development is that New Line/Warner Bros. made the proper play by letting the clock run out on Escape From New York. You can read a bit of backstory on the stillborn child of Hollywood’s reboot frenzy after the jump.

This one baited rumor-mongering from all corners of movie journalism, with Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, and Johnathan Mostow tapped to direct and the coveted Snake Plissken role causing photoshopped eyepatches on the likes of Josh Brolin, Jeremy Renner, and Tom Hardy. I doubt any of them knew about their “involvement” before Googling their own names. If they’ve seen the original movie, they’re probably just as happy as we are that it’s finally sunk.

The script was penned by Breck Eisner (Sahara), Allan Loeb (The Dilemma) and Jamie Moss (X-Men: First Class). If, on the internet, it ever makes it’s way, expect another Escape from LA.
