Some Like It Hot: Emma Watson

0

Back in middle school, I knew this girl. We revolved in different social circles, and she spent a lot of time studying, so I didn’t give her too much attention.  Fast forward to high school, where she suddenly transformed into a glorious amalgamation of brains and beauty.  I was smitten, but despite my best efforts, never broke out of the Friend zone. However, to this day she is still beautiful, smart, and a dear friend.

The Plain Jane transforming into a knockout as the years went on ties directly into this week’s subject of Some Like It Hot, Emma Watson. While her body of work consists almost entirely within the realm of the Harry Potter series, as the titular character’s female BFF Hermione Granger, it provided us a chance to watch the frizzy-haired, nagging brainiac magically transform into a gorgeous knockout who has cast a spell on many a Muggle.

Join me after the jump as we take a closer look at Emma Watson transformation from pain-in-the-Every-Flavor-Bean to one of the best parts of the Potter films.

Emma Watson was born in 1990 to two British lawyers in Paris, France. After her parents divorced when she was five, she moved with her mum (that’s how they say it in Britain) to Oxfordshire. She attended the Oxford branch of Stagecoach Theatre Arts with a focus on singing, dancing, and acting. It’s good to have a well-rounded education. After appearing in several productions, she got the break of a lifetime when she signed on for a movie about some silly ‘Boy Who Lived.’ She would go on to be one of the highest-paid actresses in the industry.

Unlike other young actresses who make more money than I ever will, I’m not annoyed by Watson. Being British, she has a natural charm, which goes a long way with me. Aside from a near flashing of her va-jay-jay on her eighteenth birthday, she hasn’t really gone the road that so many other child stars have of late, and I can respect that.

Having grown up watching her grow up (similar to the girl from high school), it’s always awesome to see the nerdy girl turn into the hot nerdy girl. Similar to Topanga from Boy Meets World, Hermione Granger went from frizzy-haired irritant to drop-dead knockout in the span of a summer or two. I don’t know what the wizard equivalent of milk is, but it’s done her body good.

What about the other Potter girls, you ask? My love of gingers is well-documented, but Ginny Weasley can’t hold a candle to Hermione Granger. Cho Chang? Meh. Moaning Myrtle? Her ectoplasmy ass doesn’t even rank. The only person in the Harry Potter world that can even come close to Emma Watson is Evanna ‘Luna Lovegood’ Lynch, but that’s because the blonde-Irish-weird combination makes me want to purchase a wand from her Diagon Alley, if you know what I mean. In the end, however, she’s still second-fiddle to my gal Hermione and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Now that the Harry Potter franchise is coming to a close, what’s next for Ms. Watson? Unfortunately, aside from that delightful new pixie haircut, not a whole lot. At one time, it was said that she would be focusing on school, but she is set to star alongside Michelle Williams in My Weekend With Marilyn, which follows the making of Marilyn Monroe’s The Prince and the Showgirl. There’s nothing else in the pipes yet, but hopefully we’ll see Emma Watson continue to mature away from the Potter series.

In the end, Emma Watson came into my life much like the girl from high school did: under the radar. By the time all was said and done, they were both hot, smart, and will forever have a little piece of my heart.

Second Opinion: The thing about Emma Watson is, she’s really cute. She doesn’t seem like the type to steal away her friend’s boyfriend, but she certainly could. Her appeal comes from a sort of bubbly, genuine look that reminds you of a John Hughes film, and not a racy magazine spread. She’s cute, but her look is understated, not aggressive. She has a disarming smile, gorgeous eyes, and hair that looks almost as good short as it does long. Almost. – Sam Membrino
