Sondheim’s Into the Woods getting adapted, probably

Into the Woods holds a special place in my heart. It was the second musical production I was in (the first being Les Mis), but I had the honor of playing a character with no lines who was not actually a part of the show. They ran out of parts and created the “Honor Guard.” I was one of them. Nonetheless, it’s a great show, and now it’s (probably) getting an adaptation by Rob Marshall, who has made movies that I have never seen but have heard mixed things about. I say probably because it’s one of two projects he is considering (the other being a remake of The Thin Man starring Johnny Depp).

Given the fantastical nature of Into the Woods (which, for those of you who don’t know, is basically an amalgamation of a bunch of fairy tales including Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Snow White, etc.), I could see a filmed version being pretty awesome. Apparently Marshall has actually worked with Sondheim before (on the stage), so that gives me hope for a quality adaptation. Here’s hoping.
