Sony acquires rights to Assassin’s Creed movie

Sony Pictures has now purchased the film rights to the massively-successful video game franchise Assassin’s Creed. For those unfamiliar, Assassin’s Creed follows a series of members of a group of Assassins (they’re a proper group, so they get to be capitalized, I guess) throughout history as they fight the Knights Templar, who want to control the world. The twist is that all of these historical adventures are through the genetic memories of a man in 2012, who somehow has the secret to stopping global cataclysm inside the memories of his ancestors. The gameplay of the first game aside, that wacky premise is actually exceptionally cool in practice. I don’t know why I’m explaining this in such detail. Most of you are probably Dtoiders.

Anyway, there’s no news about when plans will begin to make this movie, or what people might be involved with making it, but I’m axious to see if Assassin’s Creed, with its mind-bending, time-hopping historical assassinery, can be properly adapted into a motion picture.
