Soundtrack to John Hillcoat’s Lawless may cause ear boner

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis (of Dirty Three, not comics) have done some great work over the years through the Bad Seeds and Grinderman as well as their film scores on The Proposition, The Road, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. The duo has again teamed with director John Hillcoat for his bootlegging film Lawless. (Cave wrote the screenplay as well.) Based on the tracklist, the Lawless soundtrack might give me an ear boner, or as doctors call them, an earection.

Recording several songs under the name “The Bootleggers,” Cave and Ellis are going for a country/bluegrass sound and have recruited Emmylou Harris, Mark Lanegan, and Ralph Stanley. The soundtrack will include covers of The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, and Link Wray, and a Willie Nelson song as a bonus track.

The full tracklist for the Lawless soundtrack is after the cut, as well as Link Wray’s “Fire and Brimstone” for your listening pleasure. In the gallery are a UK poster for the film (with Mia Wasikowska), a US poster for the film (with Jessica Chastain), and a spiffy infographic on bootlegging. Lawless hits theaters on August 29th; the Lawless soundtrack comes out on August 28th.
