Superman’s original original mother dies

Many of you may not be familiar with the actress Susannah York; I couldn’t call myself an avid fan, but I did see York in Tony Richardson’s Tom Jones (1963), a comedic romp of a film starring Albert Finney as Tom, and York as his beloved Sophia. York is the picture of chaste sensuality in the role and very watchable, one of many fine performances that earn the film the Academy Award for Best Picture that year. York also distinguished herself with roles in Sydney Pollack’s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They (1969), for which she received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and Robert Altman’s Images (1972), for which she received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Most importantly, York starred as Superman’s Kryptonian mother, Lara, in the original film series. Not too shabby.

York passed away at the age of 72 from cancer. To her memory.
