Superman to beat up black people and unleash a giant squid

Collider has the latest in Superman: The Man of Steel rumors. According to a character sheet that various casting agencies have received, the plot, or at least a portion of it, will involve Clark Kent, during his travels around the world deciding whether or not to be Superman, getting caught up in a tribal dispute in West Africa. Comic fans out there recognize this as a large part of the 2003/2004 Superman origin rebootSuperman: Birthright, where Clark spends several issues as a recent college graduate honing his reporter skills in Africa, which gets him involved in a conflict between tribes acting as stand-ins for the Hutu and Tutsi from Rwanda. Political relevance!

Birthright may end with Kryptonian warriors that aren’t what they seem laying siege to Metorpolis, but it may be that we’ve got another Superman movie where he lifts heavy stuff and butts heads with Luthor. Because who would want to see Superman throw down for real with another hugely-powered being, wrecking cities in the wake of their battle? That would only be so damn awesome it hurts to think about.

Also in the article, Anne Hathaway is listed as a “serious contender” for the role of Lois Lane. This is pretty perfect casting, so I hope “serious contender” isn’t, in this case, the usual slang for, “MAN, we hope we get her!”

UPDATE! In other casting news, Dark Horizons is also reporting that Matthew Goode, Zack Snyder's Ozymandias, is one of the top choices for Superman. Which would be surprising, if I hadn't cast him thirty-five minutes ago. Watchmen reference! I'm not really sold on him, as he was pretty presence-less in Watchmen for my liking.
