Behold! The first trailer for Lupin the Third: The First (how’s that for a little mind-boggling?), the upcoming animated film in the long-running smooth criminal’s saga, and the first to be animated in 3D.

Dating back to the ’60s, Lupin III was a popular Japanese manga by Monkey Punch, involving the titular master thief and his partners in crime as they bounce from one suave score to another, all the while evading Inspector Zenigata of Interpol.

The series would translate to an animated series in the early ’70s, and its success would only mount from there. It was with the feature animation The Castle of Cagliostro that Hayao Miyazaki made his feature film directorial debut. It’s an iconic Japanese series that shows no signs of slowing down, evident in this new film.

Subtitled The First, details are limited, though clearly Lupin and the gang are present; we catch glimpses of right-hand man Jigen and swordsman Goemon, as well as lady-thief Fujiko. Produced by Toho Animation, Takashi Yamazaki directs. A veteran feature director, Yamazaki has also just directed the animated Dragon Quest: Your Story. A busy guy!

Hot off the presses, the film has no word of an international release just yet, though it will likely find its way stateside sooner than later.
