Teaser: The Grandmasters

It’s been a really long while since we reported anything about Wong Kar-Wai’s The Grandmasters. This much-delayed martial arts epic stars Tony Leung (In the Mood for Love, 2046) and Zhang Ziyi (Raise the Red Lantern; Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and ought to be coming out some time this year. Leung plays Yip Man, the Wing Chun master who trained Bruce Lee; the same person that Donnie Yen played in the two Ip Man films. I wonder if Yip Man will steadily grow into a folk hero like Wong Fei-Hung or Fong Sai-yuk.

So now we have a second teaser for the film in Russian. (Yeah, I don’t know why.) The main thing that strikes me about this teaser is that it looks nothing like a Wong Kar-Wai movie. It looks like the final fight in Matrix Revolutions rather than something that’s ruminative, drifting, and sumptuous. Then again, it’s just a teaser. Hopefully we’ll see the full film (or at least a full trailer) before the year’s done.
