Terrence Malick versus Thor!

0

Two men enter, one god leaves.

In what will no doubt be the quickest grudge match ever recorded in history, Terrence “The Hermit” Malick will go round for round against Thor: God of Thunder. Ok, so that’s not entirely accurate, but the story here is that Malick’s Tree of Life has been given a release date after what seems like three lifetimes of waiting. Unfortunately, it is being sent out to die. More after the jump.

At this point Thor will be in its fourth week, so I was really only using it for the headline. The inevitable death of Tree of Life will be at the hands of The Hangover 2, opening the same weekend.

The Hangover. These are not films for two entirely different audiences because The Hangover owns the box office by default. No matter how well its marketed, my most anticipated film is already in second place. Why the opening round of Summer blockbusters? To coincide with Cannes? So what? Open at Cannes and keep it leashed until September. I know we’ve been waiting long enough already for this perpetually edited might-be-masterpiece but timing is everything.

It was Saving Private Ryan that took the steam out of The Thin Red Line. Watch my heart get broken again as another Malick film sails into a fog of audience indifference.
