The 14th New York Asian Film Festival 2015! Teaser; June 26-July 11

The New York Asian Film Festival is very near and dear to my heart. When I started at Flixist in 2011, I was a news writer. I wasn’t supposed to be writing reviews or doing any of that high-minded stuff. But then my girlfriend picked up a copy of Chopsticks magazine and said, “Oh hey, don’t you like Korean movies? There’s a film festival with a whole bunch of them happening in… three days.”

!!!

It was my first real film festival, and though I had flirted with Asian cinema, it was my first deep dive. I’ve just kept going deeper and deeper ever since.

And so I’m excited to share with you the films and lineup of the 14th Annual New York Asian Film Festival. There’s a whole bunch of stuff, including the new films from the director of How To Use Guys With Secret Tips and the writer of You Are the Apple of My Eye (both films I need to rewatch soon, because they’re brilliant). Films from Japan, Korea, China, a showcase of Taiwan, and several countries more are on the docket, and there are a whole bunch of guests who will be at many of the screenings as well. It’s always been a great time, and I can’t imagine this would be any different.

As I said on Friday, though, NYAFF is no longer affiliated with the Japan Cuts Film Festival (sad face). That means that its final weekend, taking place at the SVA Theater, directly conflicts with Japan Cuts’ opening. With much of that last weekend’s programming yet to be revealed, it’s hard to know where to be. But all that aside, it looks like it’s going to be a killer festival, and June 26th can’t come soon enough.

For more information, head below or over to the Subway Cinema website. And if you’re planning on being there at any point, let me know. We should high five or something.

FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER and SUBWAY CINEMA

Announce the Lineup for

THE 14th NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL

June 26 – July 11, 2015

New York, NY (June 5, 2015) – The Film Society of Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema announce the lineup today for the 2015 New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF), which will take place from June 26 to July 8 at the Film Society and July 9 to 11 at SVA Theatre (333 W. 23rd Street). The Closing Night selection will be announced at a later date. North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema will showcase 52 feature films, including 1 World Premiere, 3 International Premieres, 13 North American Premieres, 5 U.S. Premieres, and 14 films making their New York City debuts. The festival will be attended by 18 international filmmakers and celebrity guests traveling from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and the U.S.

NYAFF’s Opening Night presentation will be the North American Premiere of Philip Yung’s Port of Call. The film centers on the brutal murder of a 16-year-old Hunan girl who moves to Hong Kong with her family and falls into prostitution. Winding through time and grounded by Christopher Doyle’s gauzy cinematography, the film follows both the story of the young girl’s descent into sex work and the grizzled detective (Aaron Kwok) who obsessively works to solve the murder. Kwok is astonishing here in a career-best performance, with all the tics and haggard body language of a man beaten down by the violence that threatens to drown him at every turn.

The Centerpiece Presentation will be the North American premiere of Sabu’s Chasuke’s Journey, which was in Competition at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. According to Variety, the film finds “Sabu in his most fun-loving element, stirring Okinawa’s magical folk art into a Capraesque yarn that flirts with ideas of fate and self-determination, but really just revels in a rich tapestry of human experience. [The film is also] full of whimsical twists and high-octane action.”

NEW YORK ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL (NYAFF)

Now in its 14th year, the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) is North America’s leading festival of popular Asian cinema, which The New York Times has called “one of the city’s most valuable events.” Launched in 2002 by Subway Cinema, the festival selects only the best, strangest, and most entertaining movies to screen for New York audiences, ranging from mainstream blockbusters and art-house eccentricities to genre and cult classics. It was the first North American film festival to champion the works of Johnnie To, Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Takashi Miike, and other auteurs of contemporary Asian cinema. Since 2010, the Festival has been produced in collaboration with the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

ABOUT FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER
