The approach to the Deus Ex: Human Revolution movie

For those who do not know, Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a cyberpunk video game that was released in 2011 by Square Enix. In November of last year, CBS Films announced that director and writer Scott Derrickson (Sinister) was hired to write and direct the film. He was also tapped to help write the screenplay for the adaptation with C. Robert Cargill.

CraveOnline was able to get a hold of both Derrickson and Cargill for an interview regarding their video game adaptation. So far, it seems fairly optimistic by the looks of it. Derrickson said in the interview: “Everything is kind of happening all at once. Deus Ex is moving like a rocket. We’ve turned in a draft of that that everyone seems excited about.”

The general problem with video game adaptations are that they rather awful. So taking a fairly popular franchise such as Deus Ex and making a movie out of it may be asking for trouble. Cargill went on to add that “[T]he chief philosophy is we’re not making a video game movie, we’re making a cyberpunk movie. We’ve taken a look at what’s worked in video games and what hasn’t, and really what we’ve broken down is what we think the audience really wants.
