The Artist wins big at the BAFTAs

Stunning approximately no-one into silence, The Artist swept last night’s BAFTA [British Academy of Film and Television Arts] Awards, taking home the prizes for Best Film, Actor, Director, Cinematography, Screenplay, Music and Costume Design. Though the Entente Cordiale was in full swing, it couldn’t stop Meryl Streep from claiming the Best Actress award for her pitch-perfect Maggie Thatcher in The Iron Lady, ahead of Artist‘s Bérénice Bejo.

Other notable winners included Christopher Plummer as Best Supporting Actor for his turn in Beginners (beating out heavyweights including Kenneth Branagh, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jim Broadbent and, erm, Jonah Hill), Octavia Spencer as Best Supporting Actress for The Help, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy nabbing Best British Film. A tight battle for Best Debut By A British Director, Writer Or Producer was won by Paddy Considine and Diarmid Scrimshaw for Tyrannosaur, leaving Joe Cornish (Attack The Block), Ralph Fiennes (Coriolanus), Richard Ayoade (Submarine) and Will Sharpe, Tom Kingsley, Sarah Brocklehurst (Black Pond) cheering politely from their tables, not making a fuss in that very British way.
