The Boondocks may be returning for a fifth season

Adult Swim’s wildly underrated The Boondocks may be returning for a fifth season. On a recent episode of Joe Rogan’s podcast, actor John Witherspoon (who played Robert Freeman) spilled the beans that the fifth season of the satirical comedy is currently in the pre-production phase. The topic came up while Witherspoon was discussing how his on-screen and off-screen personas are becoming one and the same, which makes me believe he’s probably yelled at a few big name rappers in his day.

“I’m on the cartoon – what is it? The Boondocks? I didn’t change my voice for The Boondocks,” Witherspoon stated. “And they coming back: Boondocks is coming back… It’s one of the best cartoons I’ve ever been on.” While far from a confirmation of the show seriously returning, this quote does lead one to believe that Adult Swim may be reviving the show in the near future.

While I’m a huge fan of the first three seasons of the show, I was severely disappointed with the last string of episodes. Without the involvement of series creator Aaron McGruder, The Boondocks failed to tell a story worth listening to. It also lacked the political and social commentary that made the original episodes so hilarious. Save for a single episode that poked fun at the Civil Rights Movement (which felt exactly like something McGruder would write), season four was a total dud.

If Adult Swim can get McGruder back in for writing and have the now academy award winning Regina King reprise her role as Huey and Riley, The Boondocks’ fifth season could possibly recapture the magic of those original three.
