Roland Emmerich was on track to cash in on the found footage “documentary” craze, but alas, we have been robbed of his vision. Emmerich was preparing to begin shooting The Zone, his return to alien invasion stories via the found footage style, as early as next week, but yesterday, it was announced that the project was cancelled.

Why would a film from such a high-profile director be canned so close to the beginning of shooting? The answer, Hollywood Report posits, may be
Apollo 18
, the Timur Bekmambetov-produced project about aliens on the moon. Apollo 18 is set for a March release date, just before The Zone would have come out. With a budget of only $5 million, Emmerich and crew likely decided that there wouldn’t be an audience for more than one found footage alien movie within a month’s time. Because that never happens.
