Guy Ritchie has been away from the gangster movie for far too long. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels is the film that put Ritchie on the map. He followed it up with the excellent Snatch. These fast-talking gangster comedies set the bar high for his movies going forward. His style was the benchmark for cool. He has since deviated from that type of movie. You can’t blame him since no one wants to make the same type of movie forever.

He moved on to the Sherlock Holmes series, a King Arthur movie, and most recently Aladdin. He did dip his toes back into the genre with RocknRolla, but it has been a while since we’ve seen him tackle a movie like this. The Gentlemen looks like he’s easing back into that comfortable world of criminals and all the interesting personalities that come along with it.

From writer/director Guy Ritchie comes THE GENTLEMEN, a star-studded sophisticated action comedy. THE GENTLEMEN follows American expat Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him (featuring an all-star ensemble cast including Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Michelle Dockery, Jeremy Strong, Eddie Marsan, Colin Farrell, and Hugh Grant)

The Gentlemen seems a little sparse on Ritchie’s trademark quick, clever dialog but there’s hope yet. It does look like it will retain that stylized and energetic approach he typically brings. The casting is on point with McConaughey playing the king whose vice is Mary Jane alongside other talented actors like Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell.

The Gentlemen will be coming to theaters January 24, 2020
