The Hangover III is set in Los Angeles & still redundant

What do you do when you’ve come up with a great idea that audiences really liked? You milk that cow as hard as you can until those udders are dry as a bone. Apparently Todd Phillips thinks there’s still some milk left, ignoring critical reception to The Hangover Part II and focusing on the juicy box office returns, because The Hangover Part III is still being made. Phillips even pulls out that old sequel-justifying cliche, saying that “we always envisioned it as a trilogy” while missing the point that repeating the same formula multiple times just makes the original film seem all the more stale.

Now, series lead Bradley Cooper is trying to suggest that the next film will be set in LA and not just be a retread of the past two films: “I think we adhered to the formula in the second one, for those who’ve seen it, and the third one, I think, which would close the whole trilogy…I think it’ll take place in Los Angeles and maybe not adhere to the structure. It might be different.”

It certainly could be different! Though Phillips is still working on the script so the film could enter production in early 2012, we heard plot rumors back in June from Zack Galifianakis that Part III would feature his character, Alan, stuck in a mental hospital. The rest of the Wolf Pack would have to break him out, and silly antics would ensue.

But let’s be realistic here. It’s still called “The Hangover,” and you can’t get too far away from that theme without making a different movie entirely. Personally, I look forward to the scene where someone groggily says, “Man, I can’t believe this happened again…again!”
