The King’s Speech getting the network TV treatment?

Harvey Weinstein is basically the devil, but that is old news. As we’ve mentioned before, he wants to re-cut The King’s Speech, which is rated R for language, in order to net a more family-friendly PG-13. Because those teens that were clamoring to see a British costume drama are just breaking down the doors to see it! Director Tom Hooper, who just picked up a DGA award for his film, states rather firmly, “I’m not going to cut the film.” He instead offered this slightly baffling compromise:

“I think we looked at whether it’s possible to bleep out the f—s and stuff, but I’m not going to actually cut that part.”

It’s fairly obvious he’s looked into bleeping the nasty, nasty swears out of respect for the Weinsteins, but I’m definitely getting the impression that Hooper has no intention of butchering his film, or adding heavily-distracting bleeps. That hasn’t stopped the Weinsteins in the past from killing films through editing, as the lucky few of us who saw pre-Weinstein re-cut Fanboys can attest. Let’s hope this goes away with a quickness. But it probably won’t.
