The Lego Movie 2 gets a director

Warner Brothers has confirmed that Chris McKay, the animation supervisor on The Lego Movie, will return to direct the upcoming sequel. According to Devin Faraci of Badass Digest, McKay worked closely with Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, so this choice isn’t much of a stretch.

At the moment, McKay will be working from a screenplay written by The Internship and Mr. Popper’s Penguins scribe Jared Stern and Girl Most Likely writer Michelle Morgan. So you know this is going to be good!

The Lego Movie did not really end in a place that leaves a whole lot of room for a sequel, at least from a character and thematic perspective. A sequel would feel like a betrayal of the original movie, no matter how well-directed it is. The only people who I think would be able to pull it off are Lord and Miller, but they’re off directing 22 Jump Street and will probably only return in a producing role at best.

I am not very excited for this movie, you guys.
