The Modern Ocean has an all-star cast: Hathaway, Reeves, Radcliffe, Moretz, Goldblum

Writer/director/actor Shane Carruth has made two (cult) classic films: the micro-budget time-travel mind-bender Primer and the haunting low-budget masterpiece Upstream Color. (I was so obsessed with Upstream Color I wrote a lengthy threepart analysis of it.) His latest movie, The Modern Ocean, is a big-budget nautical adventure, and it looks like Carruth is going big with his cast.

According to Deadline, The Modern Ocean will star Anne Hathaway, Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe, Chloë Grace Moretz, Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Abraham Attah, and former Flixist editor-in-chief Jeff Goldblum. As usual, Carruth will write, direct, produce, and also star in the film.

Shane Carruth makes movies like Bugs Bunny plays baseball.

This is gearing up to be totally crazy. If Carruth is given total creative control over the film and has this cast and a big budget at his disposal, The Modern Ocean could be something truly special. (Or, you know, it may frustrate mainstream audiences… which means I’ll probably like it a lot.)

Still no word on when The Modern Ocean will begin production, but it’s definitely a project I can’t wait to see.
