The never ending enchantment of movies.

There is something other-worldly about movies that is hard to quantify into words. One could come to the conclusion that movies at their face value are just what they appear to be, yet another arm of an entertainment beast that caters to our fancies. Like music, books, and arts many just squeeze movies in with the rest of those and call it a day. Nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong at all. Then there are others who view them in a different light. Those who live as well as breathe movies and could probably run down the line reciting every actor, screenwriter, or director of every movie they have seen like clockwork. Their conclusions of movies are a tad bit loftier than others. They actually believe that famous actors and directors deserve to be paid a hundred times more than say a scientist trying to find a cure for cancer. I guess there’s nothing wrong with that either, no matter how fanatical. Whichever camp you may hang your hat at, there is one thing that is true for both. Movies are an integral part of our lives and one whose clutches you couldn’t escape even if you tried.

Everywhere you…

Everywhere you look, on TV, magazines, online, movies and everything relating to them is advertised, gossiped about and analyzed. Probably more so than anything else out there. It is a surreal thing when you truly think about it. Hollywood news even trumps the news of our soldiers in Afghanistan. Perhaps it's because for as long as most people remember, movies and the viewing of them is as part of their daily regime as is breathing air. Think back to an early memory when you were younger and chances are that one of the first things you enjoyed with a loved family member was watching a movie with them. Maybe your kid sister made the popcorn, you prepared the soft drinks, and if it was a great night, you picked the movie. Think back some more and it probably wouldn't be off base to assume that your first date consisted of you taking Susie Q to watch, you guessed it, a movie, hoping that by the end of the night you could steal your first kiss. It is amazing to see just how movies are tethered to our lives.

I'm going to take a stab at why seeing things on the big screen has fascinated us so. I believe it is because movies are so effortless to get into. I mean let's be real here, there is no work involved in being a movie fan. You just pretty much watch something you think you'll like ( or has been recommended ) and off you go. Unlike other hobbies, there are no rigorous prerequisites that must be met in order to fully enjoy yourself…unless you come across a theater with uncomfortable seats. Sure there are other forms of entertainment that are just as easily to enjoy and get into ( like the mentioned music, books and art ), yet well done movies can encompass the best attributes of all of them. Movies can make you laugh, can make you cry, and can even inspire you to take action for a cause. Here's a toast to the movies and those who make them.

Even though at times some of the hoopla about the business of movies can get overbearing as well as a bit self indulgent, it doesn't take away the often needed escape from our ordinary lives that movies can provide and the power, the magic to still keep enchanting us.
