The Nun II scares away the competition in its incredible opening weekend

The Nun II

Maybe I’m just out of touch, but I’m surprised that The Nun II managed to absolutely clean house at the box office this weekend. The semi-belated sequel to the 2018 original went up against a fairly solid selection of releases and managed to more than double the second-place entry’s gross. At the domestic box office, The Nun II took $32.6 million with another $52.7 million internationally. That’s a small drop from the original film, but still more than enough to cover the reported $40 million budget.

In second place came The Equalizer 3 with $12.1 million, which fell off about 65% from last week. Word of mouth has been good on the film, but I guess fans just weren’t interested in going for round two with the Denzel sequel. Third came the incredibly belated sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 with a decent take of $10 million. Fourth was new entry Jawan, a Hindi language film that has already done incredible business overseas. Domestically, it made $6.1 million and looks to make records for foreign film releases.

Following those movies were the old stalwarts from weeks prior. Barbie came in fifth with $5.7 million, Blue Beetle was sixth with $3.8 million, and Gran Turismo landed seventh with $3.3 million. Oppenheimer came in eighth with $3 million and it seems that Barbenheimer fever may finally be over.

Here are the top ten films for the weekend of September 8-10, 2023. All totals are domestic:

  1. The Nun II – $32.6 million
  2. The Equalizer 3 – $12.1 million
  3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 – $10 million
  4. Jawan – $6.1 million
  5. Barbie – $5.7 million
  6. Blue Beetle – $3.8 million
  7. Gran Turismo – $3.3 million
  8. Oppenheimer – $3 million
  9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem – $2.6 million
  10. Bottoms – $2 million
