It seems like every SpongeBob film has to have one cameo appearance from a famous celebrity. The original movie saw David Hasselhoff in a speedo zooming across the ocean, Sponge Out of Water had Slash in a cut cameo, and now this latest features Hollywood stud Keanu Reeves.
In addition to the cameo appearance, this latest trailer does clear up what the plot of Sponge on the Run. The film isn’t specifically a prequel, but will delve into titular character SpongeBob’s past. We’ll see him meeting his pet snail, Gary, and possibly how he befriended Patrick. The main story is about searching for Gary after he goes missing, though.
It looks…fine. I do enjoy SpongeBob, but it’s almost taken on a Simpsons like quality over the years. There’s only so much you can do when you’ve been on the air past 10 years and Nickelodeon’s smash hit is approaching two-decades. I like seeing SpongeBob, but I don’t know that I truly am in love anymore.
At any rate, Sponge on the Run will be hitting theaters in May 2020. Look out for it and its John Wick cameo when it does come out.
