Theft of Nic Cage’s Action Comics #1 turning into film

Reno 911‘s Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon have a heist movie in the works, and it involves Nicolas Cage and Action Comics #1. The story will center on band of geeks trying to steal Cage’s copy the comic book. This is based on the real-life theft of Cage’s Action Comics #1 back in 2000. The comic was finally found in 2011 inside of a storage locker. Cage sold the comic at auction for $2.1 million. That’s roughly the shooting budget of Vampire’s Kiss. It’s also the equivalent value of 8.4 million copies of Youngblood #1.

Garant and Lennon wrote the film with Cage in mind, though Heat Vision says it’s unlikely that Cage will appear in the film. Jason Statham’s name was also mentioned in the article, though it appears he’s not involved either. Too bad. I would have paid good money to see Statham do his best bad Nicolas Cage impersonation. (It’s basically Jimmy Stewart on crack, and I mean that in the best possible way.)

Best case scenario for casting: Nicolas Cage plays a caricature of himself in the lead and he also plays all of the thieves except for one played by Jason Statham, who thinks he’s Nicolas Cage.
