Toy Story 4 filmmaker Josh Cooley set to direct an animated Transformers film

In a bit of exciting news, Paramount and Hasbro’s upcoming animated Transformers feature is starting to draw big names, with Toy Story 4 director Josh Cooley now set to direct the bot brawl.

From a script by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (both credited writers on Ant-Man and the Wasp), the animated Transformers film is said to be an origin story, taking place on the Transformer-homeworld Cybertron. With the relationship between leading Autobot Optimus Prime and the Decepticon’s unruly Megatron taking center stage, maybe we’ll finally find out just what makes those gears grind.

With 2018’s Bumblebee leaving a mark at the box office and focusing on a story set before Michael Bay’s films, Hasbro would seem to be playing into a somewhat nostalgic, back-to-basics appeal with its cinematic Transformers approach. However, it’s made clear that the animated film will not tie-in directly with the live-action films.

I’m all for quality bot-action and animation, so fingers crossed this pans out well. Coming off of his Oscar win for Toy Story, Cooley’s involvement is a major get for Paramount, and a good sign for the project. Not to mention Ant-Man and the Wasp was great!

No date is set, though the final draft of the script is said to be in the works, so don’t expect to see this particular Transformers project for quite some time.
