Trailer: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Every time I skim some text and see this movie’s name, I mistake it for some big-screen version of Nickelodeon’s classic horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark? Then I realize it’s actually the imperative, not the inquisitive, and get all disappointed, because that show was great and everything was better when I was younger and kids these days don’t have any taste and won’t get off my lawn.

So submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I call this story “The Tale of the Girl Who Just Had to Open the Door of the Damned and Let Hideous Creatures Roam the House,” or Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. The film is a remake of a 1973 made-for-TV flick about creatures scaring the crap out of a girl, though this version changes the female lead from a wife to a daughter played by Bailee Madison. Guy Pearce plays her skeptical father, while Katie Holmes is the dad’s girlfriend.

The trailer is pretty stock as far as horror trailers go, feeling like a transplant from the Asian horror remake boom a while back. Each shot fades in and out so quickly there’s easily more black than actual footage, which is kind of ridiculous. Still, it has Guillermo del Toro’s name attached to it, even if he just wrote it, so it could turn out to be a fun watch.

Though not as fun as if it was a new episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? Damn, that was a great show.
