You’re never too old for a Manic Pixie Dream Girl.
That’s seriously all this movie is. The same old MPDG song and dance; a grumpy man finds pseudo-salvation in the romance of a quirky, happy-go-lucky possibly mentally unstable woman. They need each other! They complete each other’s lives! Maybe she’s not even real, maybe he’s actually dead the whole time! Maybe one day we’ll move past overused, vapid portrayals of women in cinema!
Elsa & Fred, despite having a sold cast (Shirley MacLaine, Christopher Plummer) looks boring, predictable and like it will reinforce the extremely problematic MPDG archetype. Maybe it will surprise me though, who knows? Elsa & Fred will release in theaters on November 7th 2014.
