I must admit, at face value, I didn’t give Jack and Diane a second glance. It’s two young girls discovering love and forging a relationship with each other against all odds. Nothing we haven’t seen before. However, there’s a twist. There are animated segments in the film created by the Brothers Quay, creators of The Epic of Gilgamesh and Street of Crocodiles. I studied their work in college, and it’s some truly amazing stuff, in the vein of Jan Švankmajer. As stress mounts on the girls, one of them begins undergoing a transformation only hinted at in the trailer. This suddenly jumped onto my “to watch” list.
Jack and Diane will be hitting VOD services September 8th, with a theatrical run following November 2nd.
