Trailer: Only God Forgives (Red Band)

We finally have an honest to goodness trailer for Nicolas Winding-Refn’s Only God Forgives. It’s the first U.S. trailer I’ve seen, and I am about as excited as I am capable of being for this film. That is to say, I want to see this right the f**k now! I’m sure everyone is tired of me reiterating my love for Refn’s Drive (and Bronson, for that matter), which is easily one of the best films of the last several years, but gosh darn it, I just can’t help myself. Needless to say, my body is ready for the director’s next project starring Ryan Gosling, or “The Goz” as I like to call him.

Refn’s films (Bronson, Valhalla Rising, Drive) tend to not skimp on the violence, so I have to say I’m quite intrigued that for a red band trailer, the brutality of what occurs during the film is really only hinted at. And that’s fine by me! I don’t want anything to be spoiled, and Refn is certainly a director who knows how to use violence and make it have punch and purpose. I’d also like to point out that the film’s color palette is just fantastic, with stark blues and reds, and I love that they show Gosling’s character repeatedly clinching his fist. A symbolic representation of the vengeance he’s taking perhaps? Maybe, but I’m sure he also probably just punches the s**t out of people as well. I can’t wait!

Here’s the synopsis, so that you may begin to share in my excitement:

Julian (Gosling) lives in exile in Bangkok where he runs a Thai boxing club as a front for the family’s drugs smuggling operation. When Julian’s brother Billy is killed their mother, Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas), arrives in the city. She wants revenge and forces Julian to find the killer. Julian’s contacts in the criminal underworld lead him directly to The Angel of Vengeance, a retired police officer who knows everything and who is both Judge and Punisher. Jenna demands that Julian kill The Angel of Vengeance, an act that will cost him dearly.
