Trailer: Red Riding Hood

0

After directing the first entry in the Twilight saga, Catherine Hardwicke isn’t straying far from what she knows with her adaptation of the Brothers Grimm fairytale Red Riding Hood. This second trailer is appropriately gothic and brooding, with Amanda Seyfriend looking the wide-eyed innocent in her redder-than-red hood and suggestions that the wolf terrorising her village may in fact be the Taylor Lautner-ish woodsman she’s been going a bit gooey for. In other words, the person she loves may in fact be the very thing that could end up destroying her! Cue angst in the woods.

Hardwicke's obviously going for a modern gothic vibe (hence the incongruous Nine Inch Nails soundtrack), but the trailer doesn't hint at her having much new to say. It's not like the original fairytale wasn't rife with sexual connotations and making them more explicit – Amanda Seyfried looks like she gets a bit of a going-over – isn't much in the way of justification for a new adaptation of an already extensively-told tale. Fortunately Gary Oldman turns up dressed like a burke and proceeds to lay down the law Crucible-style, which could prove the film's salvation in a high-camp sort of way, but there's not much to suggest that this is going to be anything better than a self-indulgent Twilight knock-off. At least everyone who gets off on Amanda Seyfried looking doe-eyed into camera will probably have the time of their lives.
