Ruby Sparks looks like a fun sophomore picture from Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who previously directed the indie darling Little Miss Sunshine six years ago. It’s got a very strong Stranger than Fiction vibe, centering around a young novelist (Paul Dano) who somehow writes a character that loves him into existence. As he writes more about her, he realizes he has absolute control over her actions and personality. There’s some really interesting potential for a story about love and control here. Also, I’m a goddamned sucker for magical realism, so it’s basically a given that I’m going to see this picture.
Ruby Sparks opens July 25th.
