Trailer: Silent House

Elizabeth Olsen had a real star-making performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene, and it looks like she’ll be the driving force of Silent House. This trailer (with its homage to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) looks like it could be an intense, real-time depiction of a home invasion.

Silent House is a remake of a Uruguayan film of the same name (well, La Casa Muda in Spanish). Like the original, the remake is supposedly done in a single continuous take. Yeah, we’re talking Russian Ark here rather than Rope or Running Time. (The latter two films relied on cuts hidden in whip pans, shadows, shirts, and so on.)

And yet, there is some controversy over this “single-take” claim. About a year ago, /Film noted it seemed fishy. Given the logistics of it all, I’m skeptical too. There’s no shame in simulating a single take through masked cuts — that takes a lot of skill and ingenuity. We’ll no doubt hear more about this controversy as the March 9 release date approaches. I wonder if the filmmakers will stick to their story.
